School Music Trip to Rome

While it may lack the musical pedigree of some other European capitals, the Eternal City is an incomparable location for a music tour. Performances can be arranged in some of the most prestigious venues in Europe including the Pantheon, and for choirs it is possible to accompany Mass in St Peter’s Basilica.  Rome is of course the city of Puccini, Tosca and Callas and a visit to the Opera will provide a tremendous cultural immersion. Rome’s other attractions including the Colosseum and its historical centre complement a rich and rewarding experience.

Day 1

Flight to Rome. Rehearsal time and local sightseeing

Flight to Rome: On arrival you are met by your guide and private coach and transfer to your hotel with time for lunch.

Rehearsal Time: This afternoon there will be time for rehearsal either at the hotel or at a city church or other suitable location.

Evening: Dinner this evening will be a city centre restaurant.

Day 2

First Performance at Sant'Agnese in Agone. Walking Tour of the historic centre

Performance in Sant’Agnese in Agone:  This morning you have your First Performance in the Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone. This impressive baroque church in Piazza Navona is one of the most beautiful in Rome with wonderful reliefs and ceiling frescoes. You start by singing one piece on the steps of the church for the whole of the square to enjoy, before going inside the church to continue.

Walking Tour: In the afternoon you have a guided walking tour of the historic centre taking in all the famous sights. You start at the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. It is traditional to toss a coin into the fountain to ensure a return to the Eternal City. You next cross the Via del Corso, one of Rome’s principal shopping streets, and soon reach the Pantheon which was built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian and later converted to a church. The tour concludes in the wonderful Piazza Navona. Here, in addition to admiring Bernini’s fountains and the local artists’ works, you may also wish to sample the world famous tartufo ice cream.

Evening: Dinner this evening will be a city centre restaurant.

Day 3

Colosseum and Roman Forum followed by your second performance at the Pantheon

Colosseum & Forum: This morning you visit Rome’s most famous sight. The sheer scale of the Colosseum never fails to impress and you can imagine the Gladiatorial combats where over 50,000 spectators watched gladiators fight. Leaving the Colosseum, you pass by the Arch of Constantine and enter the ruins of the Roman Forum, with its many temples, basilicas and triumphal arches. This was the place where ordinary Roman’s would have lived, worked and traded.

Performance at the Pantheon: After lunch you have your Second Performance at the Pantheon. One of Rome’s principal tourist attractions, the Pantheon is always busy, and crowds throng the vast building so a large audience is guaranteed.

Free time and shopping: In the afternoon you have free time for shopping along the Via del Corso or in the streets around the Spanish Steps.
Evening: Dinner this evening will be a city centre restaurant.

Day 4

Vatican Museums and St. Peters Basilica, followed by Mass Accompaniment

Vatican Museums: This morning you have a guided tour of the Vatican Museums. Highlights of the tour include the magnificent Gallery of Maps, a stunning collection of frescoes which date from 1580 and depict in glorious colour the Pope’s dominions but the highlight is undoubtedly Michelangelo’s extraordinary ceiling in the Sistine Chapel.

St. Peter’s Basilica: The majesty and size of the Basilica is truly unforgettable and there are many treasures and artworks, including the famous Pieta sculpture by Michelangelo and Bernini’s magnificent Baldachin over the Altar.

Accompanying Mass in St. Peters Basilca: Your performance today will accompany Mass in St. Peters, typically in the late afternoon. Normally four pieces are sung: entrance, offertory, communion and exit.

The Cupola: If the queues are not too long, take the trip to the Cupola or Dome, for a superb view over St. Peter’s Square and the city. Dinner this evening will be a city centre restaurant.

Day 5

Vittorio Emanuele Monument and free time for shopping before your flight home

Vittorio Emanuele Monument: This morning you visit the so-called ‘Wedding Cake’ – the dazzling white marble of the Vittorio Emanuele Monument, built in the late 19th century as a memorial to Italy’s unifying Monarch. Take a trip to the top, by lift, for a unique view across the Forum and towards the Colosseum, and a fantastic view down the Via del Corso.

Free time: There will be free time for sightseeing on your own and souvenir shopping.

Flight home: In the afternoon you transfer to the airport for your flight home.
