Trips to Burma

Burma is the familiar name that most people associate with the country which is now known as Myanmar. This fascinating, unusual and complex country, has gone through many unsettled years under military Junta rule, but is now emerging as a new and exciting tourist destination that groups are wishing to experience when in South East Asia.

Burma borders Thailand, India, Laos, China and Bangladesh, and is a nation made up of over 100 ethnic groups. Burma was recently in the World headlines when Aung San Suu Kyi was finally released from her house arrest after many years, and she is now a leader that is shaping Burma’s future.

The Capital City is Yangon (formerly Rangoon) and here you can see well preserved colonial architecture, Buddhist relics dating back to the Sixth Century, bustling markets, lakes and the gilded Shwedagon Pagoda. In central Burma lies the ancient city of Bagan where more than 2,000 Buddhist monuments and pagodas tower over the grassy plains. North East of Bagan is Mandalay which is the ancient former Royal Capital of Burma. At its centre is the restored Mandalay Palace from the Konbaung Dynasty. Mandalay Hills provide spectacular views of the city and surrounding Pagodas. Lake Inle is located South East of Mandalay and is the second largest freshwater lake in Burma, where we can take a boat trip to see traditional net fishing techniques, requiring astonishing balancing skills. Your tour to Burma will be educational and culturally enriching, and will undoubtedly leave a long and lasting impression.
