  • Day 1

    Depart from home

Today you depart on your flight to France. Flights can be arranged from your chosen departure airport.

  • Day 2

    Arrive in Bordeaux

After lunch you will be able to explore some of the city’s main landmarks including the Place de la Bourse, the Grosse Cloche (an ancient belfry and city gate) and Saint Andre Cathedral which dates from 1096. Adjacent to the Cathedral is the bell tower of Tour Pey Berland and you can climb its steps for a spectacular panoramic view of the city. The three giant bells – named Marie, Clemence and Marguerite - ring out throughout the day.

  • Day 3

Museum of Contemporary Art & Musée de la Création Franche

In the morning you visit the Museum of Contemporary Art with a permanent exhibition of some 1,300 works by 190 artists. There are frequent, new, temporary exhibitions, discussions on art history, and guided tours with special emphasis for students.

In the afternoon you go off the beaten track somewhat and visit the Musée de la Création Franche, a small museum set in attractive gardens which houses an eclectic collection of modern and contemporary art, some of which is the work of people from outside the mainstream arts community.

  • Day 4

Musée des Beaux Arts & Submarine Base

This morning you visit the Musee des Beaux Arts (Museum of Fine Arts) at the Hotel de Ville which houses a wonderful collection of paintings and sculptures from the 16th to the 20th century. There are seven rooms of paintings starting with the Renaissance period and progressing through works by Rubens, Van Dyck, Matisse and Renoir.

In the afternoon you visit the Submarine Base (La Basse Sous Marine), a unique location for contemporary artwork housed in a former German U-boat bunker. The venue has been converted into an original, underground cultural location and offers a range of exhibitions, concerts, jazz, theatre and dance. Work is ongoing here and the variety and range of temporary exhibits may change.

  • Day 5

Bernard Magrez Institute of Contemporary Art

This morning you visit the Bernard Magrez Institut of Contemporary Art, housed in the delightful Hotel Labottiere, a private mansion dating from the 18th century, and set in beautifully manicured gardens. The afternoon will be free in Bordeaux for sightseeing and shopping on your own, or we could arrange a visit the Center National Jean Moulin, the WW2 Resistance Museum which honours Jean Moulin, the leader of the French Resistance who was executed by the Nazis in 1943.

  • Day 6

    Fly home

After breakfast your private transport will collect you from your hotel and transfer you to the airport for the flight home. Alternatively, why not extend your tour to visit the fascinating Loire region with its Chateaux and Vineyards, or combine some time in Paris.
