China Tours

China is undoubtedly a very complex society with a people, who are extraordinarily friendly and welcoming.

The capital city Beijing combines both the very ancient with the very modern.  The incredible Forbidden City – the Ming Dynasty Imperial Palace – with its numerous pagodas and temples with their yellow roof tiles – is resplendent in its location next to the huge open expanse of Tiananmen Square, dominated by Mao’s portrait and mausoleum.  Close by lie the decadent shopping malls of fashionable Wangfujing Street which would not look out of place in any western capital. The second city, Shanghai, and its modern high rise suburb of Pudong is the rising centre of commerce and finance in the country.

It goes without saying that no visit to China is complete without seeing the incredible Great Wall.  Many of the finest sections such as Badaling can be visited in a long day trip from Beijing, or a longer multi-day adventure can be undertaken, walking a continuous section from Mutiyanu to Simatai over several enthralling days.

In the centre of the country, the historic city of Xian is home to the famous Terra Cotta warriors, discovered in 1974 and dating from the third century BC.  Over 8000 carved stone soldiers stand guard over the tomb of the first  emperor of the Qin Dynasty. Further south, between Guillin and Chongqing the great gorge of the Yangtze cuts through an incredible karst landscape where a spectacular river cruise can be taken to reveal the hidden treasures of this incredible landscape.  And the southern province of Yunnan provides high mountain scenery to rival that of neighbouring Tibet. Finally, we must not forget Hong Kong – the fragrant harbour.  Its special status within China means that it its unique character has largely been preserved and is as vibrant today as it has ever been.
